Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, used as an adjunct to levodopa/carbidopa to treat patients with idiopathic Parkinson‘s disease. It is used during the later stages when the patient does not respond well to levodopa/carbidopa. It increases the levels of levodopa/carbidopa in the brain, enhancing its effectiveness.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
When it is to be taken :
PO: The recommended dose is 200 mg with each levodopa/carbidopa up to a maximum of 1600 mg/day.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth.
Special Instruction :
*It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; do not drive a car or operate machinery, while taking this medication.
*Avoid alcohol consumption.
*It may lead to an increase in involuntary movements.
Caution needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Diarrhea, movement disorder, nausea, abdominal pain.

Sweating increased
Central Nervous System -
Involuntary movements, increased or decreased movements, dizziness, anxiety, drowsiness, agitation, and worsening of condition.
