India- Migril.
International- Cafatine Rectal Suppository, Cafergot, Cafergot Rectal Suppository, Cafetrate Rectal Suppository, Ercaf, Migergot Rectal Suppository, Wigraine.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an ergot alkaloid, prescribed for migraine headache.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in patients with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems or severe infection, blood vessels problem, who are taking antifungal medications, HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotic medications, during pregnancy, labor and hypersensitivity.

Category X : Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.


When it is to be taken : 
PO-Sublingual and rectal: The recommended initial dose is 2 mg ergotamine with fixed combination with caffeine. Maximum: 10 mg/week.

How it should be taken : 
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth (to be placed under the tongue) and as a suppository to insert rectally.




Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of blood problems, stroke, anxiety, sleeping problems or heart problems, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


* Avoid exposure to cold.


Side Effects : 
Heart -
Bluish, absence of pulse, cold extremities, cell death, heart failure, pain, EKG changes, muscle pain, fast/slow heart rate and high blood pressure.
Gastrointestinal -
Nausea and vomiting.
Central Nervous System -
Tingling, numbness, weakness and unsteadiness.
Allergic Reactions -
Localized swelling and itching.

Other Precautions : 
* Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store at controlled room temperature 15° -30° C
