Loteprednol

Generic Name : Loteprednol

Pronunciation : lo te PRED nol off THAL mik

Trade Name(s): 
India- Loteflam Eye Drops, Lotepred Eye Drops.
International- Lotemax , Alrex ,Zylet , Lotemax Ophthalmic Ointment.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a corticosteroid, prescribed for eye swelling caused by surgery, infection, allergies, and other conditions. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in patients with bacterial or viral infections, and hypersensitivity.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 
Ophthalmic- Allergic conjunctivitis- As 0.2% susp: Instill 1 drop 4 times/day for Ocular inflammation-As 0.5% suspension: Instill 1-2 drops 4 times/day. May start with 1 drop hourly, then reduce frequency gradually. Post-op ocular inflammation as 0.5% susp: Instill 1-2 drops 4 times/day, beginning 24 hour post-op for 2 weeks.


How it should be taken : 
It comes as a drops, instill into your eyes as per your doctor's advice.




Special Instruction : 
*May mask and exacerbate existing ocular infection.
* Re-evaluate patients if symptoms do not improve after 2 days.

*It may cause blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
*Do not wear soft contact lenses while using this medication.

Side Effects : 
Central Nervous System-
Headache.

Respiratory-
Runny nose and inflammation of pharynx.

Eye-
Abnormal vision/blurring, burning sensation on instillation, swelling (or edema) of the conjunctiva, dry eyes, itching, conjunctivitis/irritation, corneal abnormalities, glaucoma, optic nerve injury, posterior sub capsular cataracts, changes in visual acuity, field defects, secondary ocular infection.

Other Precautions : 
*Monitor eye pressure while using it for long term.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature(15-25°C).
