Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is a purgative and laxative, prescribed for chronic constipation.



When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Contraindicated in patients who require a low galactose diet and intestinal obstruction.

Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.


When it is to be taken : Adult: The usual adult, oral dosage is 2 to 3 tablespoonfuls (30 to 45 mL, containing 20 g to 30 g of lactulose) three or four times daily.
How it should be taken : It comes as a powder to take by mouth, with or without food.



Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of diabetes or who require a low-lactose diet, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Side Effects : 
Gastrointestinal -
Flatulence, belching and abdominal discomfort.


Other Precautions : 
* Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature. Keep it away from sunlight and moisture.
