Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is a phosphate binder, prescribed to reduce serum phosphate in patients with end stage renal disease.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
When it is to be taken : PO- Initial dose is 750 mg to 1.5 g/day in divided doses.
How it should be taken : It comes as a chewable tablet to take by mouth with food.
Special Instruction :
* It may cause dizziness, drowsiness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
* Caution needed while using in patients with history of ulcer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, bowel obstruction and during pregnancy.
Side Effects :
Gastrointestinal -
Stomach upset, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea and constipation.
Miscellaneous -
Problems with the dialysis graft, headache, dizziness and blurred vision.
Other Precautions :
* Avoid excess dosage.
