Other Name : Tocopherol

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an antioxidant, prescribed for Vitamin E deficiency, cystic fibrosis. It is a dietary supplement.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Hypersensitivity.





Pregnancy Category :












A B C D X
Category A : Adequate and well-controlled human studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy (and there is no evidence of risk in later trimesters).


When it is to be taken : 
Adult: PO- Vitamin E deficiency- 40-50 mg/day of d-α tocopherol.
Supplementation in cystic fibrosis- 100-200 mg/day of dl-α-tocoferil acetate or 67-135 mg/day of d-α-tocopherol.
Abetalipoproteinaemia- 50-100 mg/kg/day of dl-α-tocoferil acetate or about 33-67 mg/kg/day of d-α-tocopherol.



Dietary supplement:




Infants-
0 to 6 months: 4 mg/day

7 to 12 months: 5 mg/day

Children-
1 to 3 years: 6 mg/day

4 to 8 years: 7 mg/day

9 to 13 years: 11 mg/day

Adolescents and Adults-
14 and older: 15 mg/day

How it should be taken : 
It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with food.




Special Instruction : 
* Avoid taking 400 IU per day or higher; otherwise it may increase the risk of death.



* During pregnancy or breastfeeding it should be taken in higher amounts.

Side Effects : 
Fatigue, nausea, headache, bleeding problem, skin rash and allergic reactions.


Other Precautions : 
*Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature (250C), and in an airtight container.
