Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is an antibacterial agent, prescribed for tuberculosis (TB).It stops the growth of TB cells.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
When it is to be taken :
PO- Adult- Initial: The recommended dose is 15mg/kg.
Re-treatment: The recommended dose is 25 mg/kg.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, once a day in the morning.
Special Instruction :
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney or liver disease, gout or eye disorders, any allergy, who are taking other medications, children less than 13 years old, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
* Monitor liver, kidney functions, complete blood cell counts, and vision changes regularly while taking this medication.
* Avoid long-term use of this medication.
Side Effects :
Most Common -
Vision impairment.
Hypersensitivity -
Stevens-Johnson syndrome, skin inflammation, redness of the skin, itching and joint pain.
Gastrointestinal -
Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and abdominal pain.
Central Nervous System -
Fever, uneasiness, headache, dizziness, mental confusion, disorientation and hallucinations.
Blood -
Decrease in white blood cells and platelets.
Other Precautions :
* Take full course of treatment.
Storage Conditions :
Store it at controlled room temperature (20 to 25°C), and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
