Lidocaine and Prilocaine

Generic Name : Lidocaine and Prilocaine

Pronunciation : LYE-doe-kane-PRIL-oh-kane

Trade Name(s): 
India- Lovelong, Primla, Asthesia, Prilox, Satisfaction gel.
International- Emla.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is a dermal anesthesia, prescribed for tingling, pricking or numbness of a person's skin.



When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Hypersensitivity.

Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.


When it is to be taken : Topical- The recommended dose range is 1gm to 20gms over 10 to 200 cm2 of skin surface for 1 to 4 hours.
How it should be taken : It comes as a cream, to be applied on intact skin and covered with an occlusive dressing.





Special Instruction : 
* Do not apply on broken/irritated skin or open wounds.



* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of certain blood disorder (G6PD-genetic disorder, especially in children), heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, elderly, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.



* Avoid getting this medication into eyes, nose, or mouth.



* Avoid excess dosage.

Side Effects : 
Most Common-


Local- redness, burning sensation and swelling.
Others-


Itching, rash and paleness.

Other Precautions : 
* For external use only.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at controlled room temperature (15-30°C).
