Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is an antibiotic, prescribed for certain types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, diphtheria, legionnaires' disease, pertussis etc.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.
When it is to be taken :
PO- Aults: The usual dose is 250 mg every 6 hours taken one hour before meals.
Child:
The usual dosage is 30 to 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, on an empty stomach.
Special Instruction :
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver disease, yellowing of the skin or eyes, colitis, stomach problems, irregular heartbeat, blood disease porphyria, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* Avoid long-term use of this medication; otherwise it may cause secondary infection.
* It may aggravate muscle weakness in patients with myasthenia gravis.
* Monitor liver function, kidney function and complete blood cell counts regularly while taking this medication.
Side Effects :
Most Frequent -
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and loss of appetite.
Other Precautions :
* Avoid excess dosage.
Storage Conditions :
Store it at controlled room temperature (15°C to 30°C), and in an airtight container.
