Etidronate

Generic Name : Etidronate

Pronunciation : e ti droe' nate

Trade Name(s): 
International- Didronel.
India- Disonate Tab, Etifem Tab.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a bisphosphonate, prescribed for Paget's disease, osteoporosis and hypercalcaemia.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in people with low blood calcium level, esophagus problem, unable to stand or sit for more than half an hour.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 
Adult: PO-The recommended dose is 5 to 7.5mg/kg/day.

How it should be taken : 
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth with or without food.




Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of stomach, esophagus, blood clotting, kidney or liver problems, cancer, anemia, asthma, smoking, menstrual disorder, any allergy, infection, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


* Patient may develop with increased risk of jawbone problems; tooth examination needed before the treatment.


* Monitor blood calcium level, bone thickness regularly while taking this medication.

Side Effects : 
Most Common-

Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, rash, hair loss and muscle/ joint pain.
Central Nervous System-

Confusion, depression, hallucination and tingling.
Allergic Reactions-

Rash, itching, skin eruption and hives.

Other Precautions : 
*Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at controlled room temperature (25°C) and in an airtight container.
