Leucovorin

Generic Name : Leucovorin

Pronunciation : loo-koh-VOR-in

Trade Name(s): 
India- Leucovorin Calcium, Lucal Amp, Leucovorin.
International- Wellcovorin.


Other Name : Folinic acid, citrovorum factor, 5-formyl tetrahydrofolate.

Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is a folic acid analog, prescribed for reducing the toxic effects of methotrexate.



When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Contraindicated in patients with anemia (B12 deficiency) and hypersensitivity.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : IM/IV/PO- The recommended dose is 15 mg (10 mg/m2) every 6 hours.
How it should be taken : It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein or muscle. It also comes as a tablet to take by mouth.



Special Instruction : 
* Caution needed for patients with history of blood problems, pleural effusion, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


Side Effects : 
Diarrhea, severe allergic reactions like rash, hives, itching, and difficulty in breathing or swallowing.

Other Precautions : 
* Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store in refrigerated conditions (2 to 8°C), protect from light and heat.
