Exenatide

Generic Name : Exenatide

International-Byetta.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a incretin mimetic, prescribed for type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise, either alone or with other medications.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Hypersensitivity.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 
Adult- The initial dose is 5 mcg injected under the skin (subcutaneously) twice daily, 60 minutes before breakfast or dinner.

How it should be taken : 
It comes as a solution for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider under the skin.




Special Instruction : 
*Caution should be exercised in patients with history of gallstone disorder, smoking, drinking alcohol, who is taking other medications, any allergy, stomach, heart, liver, or kidney problems, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


*Patient may develop with low blood sugar, weight loss and decreased appetite; monitor blood sugar regularly while taking this medication.


*It may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

Side Effects : 
Most Common-

Nausea.
Central Nervous System-

Dizziness or lightheadedness, nervousness, mood changes, weakness, shakiness, confusion, epilepsy and loss of consciousness.
Gastrointestinal-

Extreme thirst, extreme hunger, stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea and difficulty in swallowing.
Skin-

Rash, hives and itching.
Allergic reactions-

Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs and difficulty in breathing.

Other Precautions : 
*If patient is taking oral contraceptives or antibiotics take them one hour before this medication.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it in refrigerator (2 to 8°C), protect from light. Do not freeze it.
