Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This combination medication contains estrogen and progestin, used as a highly effective oral contraceptive. In addition, it reduces the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, ovarian cysts and fibrocystic breast disease. It also helps to regularize cycles and reduce the incidence of anemia, premenstrual tension and pain during periods. It helps to improve endometriosis and pelvic inflammatory disease.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category X : Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.
When it is to be taken :
Adult: PO- Monophasic combined OC: As tab containing levonorgestrel 100-250 mcg and ethinyl estradiol 20-50 mcg: 1 tab once daily. Triphasic combined OC: Levonorgestrel 50-125 mcg + ethinyl estradiol 30-40 mcg: 1 tab once daily.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a tablet to take by mouth once a day, with food or milk.
Special Instruction :
*Caution should be exercised in patients with history of sex-steroid dependent cancer, past ectopic pregnancy, indigestion, ovarian cysts, active liver disease, jaundice, heart or kidney impairment; diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, migraine, depression,lactation, conditions exacerbated by fluid retention; increased level of calcium in blood, gall bladder diseases, high lipid levels, patients at risk of venous blood clot, breast cancer, preexisting Fibroid Tumors of the Uterus and benign tumor of the liver.
*Missed pills and interaction with other drugs may require additional contraceptive precautions.
Side Effects :
Genitourinary-
Menstrual irregularities, spotting, inflammation of vagina, breast cancer, tenderness, pain, enlargement, secretion, infertility after discontinuation of treatment.
Central Nervous System-
Headache, dizziness, depression, changes in libido.
Gastrointestinal-
Disturbance of appetite, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, and bloating, inflammation of pancreas.
Skin-
Hair loss, local skin reactions, acne, severe allergic reactions, rash, darkening of skin over face.
Liver-
Liver impairment, jaundice, gallstone formation.
Heart-
High blood pressure.
Miscellaneous-
Loss/Gain in weight.
Potentially Fatal- Liver tumors, increased risk of blood clot, increased chances of breast or cervical cancers in patients already at risk for these cancers.
Other Precautions :

Contraindicated in patients with undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, severe arterial disease, family history of high lipids; liver adenoma; inherited or acquired disorders of certain enzymes (porphyria); history of breast cancer; liver impairment; blood clot disorders; breast cancer; estrogen-dependent tumor; smoking, patients with diabetes complications; during pregnancy, migraine, high blood pressure, stroke ; gallstones; acute kidney failure (uremia) and a low platelet count, prior to major surgery; breast feeding during first 6 months after delivery.
