Pronunciation : e-ZET-i-mibe - SIM-va-STAT-in

Trade Name(s): 
International- Vytorin.


Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This combination medication contains an antihyperlipidemic agent and an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, prescribed for high cholesterol with proper diet.




When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in patients with liver enzyme abnormalities, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and hypersensitivity.

Category X : Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.


When it is to be taken : 
Adult- PO- The recommended usual starting dose is 10/20 mg/day. The dosage range is 10/10 mg/day through 10/80 mg/day.

How it should be taken : 
It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.




Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of low blood pressure, sugar, thyroid deficiency, muscle cramps, hormonal, or electrolyte problems, seizures, kidney, or liver disease, alcohol abuse, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


* It may cause dizziness or changes in vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.



* Proper dental care is needed while taking this medication.



* Monitor blood cholesterol levels, liver function, and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) blood level regularly while taking this medication.

Headache.
Gastrointestinal -


Diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, indigestion, flatulence and stomach inflammation.
Respiratory -


Influenza and upper respiratory tract infection.
Musculoskeletal -


Muscle pain and pain in extremities.
ENT -


Inner ear damage.
Skin -


Skin inflammation and rash.

Genitourinary -


Increased sugar and urinary tract infections.
Body as a whole -


Weakness and swelling.
Central Nervous System -

Sleeplessness.

Other Precautions : 
* Avoid excess dosage.

Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature (20-25°C).
