Why it is prescribed (Indications) :
This medication is an antiarrhythmic agent, prescribed for high blood pressure and to control heart rate.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications):
Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.
When it is to be taken :
Adult: IV- Arrhythmias- As HCl: Loading dose: 500 mcg/kg; Maintenance: 50 mcg/kg/min for 4 minutes. If response is unsatisfactory within the 1st 5 minutes, give 2nd loading dose of 500 mcg/kg, then maintenance infusion at 100 mcg/kg/min for 4 minutes.
Perioperative HTN and/or tachycardia during anesthesia: Loading dose: 80 mg, then 150 mcg/kg/min via infusion, up to 300 mcg/kg/min if needed. After anesthesia: Infuse 500 mcg/kg/min for 4 minutes, and then infuse at 300 mcg/kg/min if needed. Postoperative: Loading dose: 500 mcg/kg, maintenance: 50 mcg/kg/min for 4 minutes.
How it should be taken :
It comes as a solution for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.
Special Instruction :
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of low blood pressure, diabetes, heart, respiratory diseases, kidney impairment, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
* It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
Side Effects :
Heart-
Low blood pressure, chest pain, fainting, low heart rate and flushing.
Central Nervous System-
Dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, headache, agitation, fatigue, anxiety, lightheadedness, weakness and tingling.
Respiratory-
Asthma, wheezing, difficulty in breathing, nasal congestion and abnormal breathing sounds.
Gastrointestinal-
Nausea, vomiting, indigestion, constipation, dry mouth and abdominal discomfort.
Miscellaneous-
Urinary retention, speech disorder, abnormal vision, rigors and fever.
Other Precautions :
*Take full course of treatment.
Storage Conditions :
Store it at room temperature (25°C), and in an airtight container. Keep away from children.
